What is a ccTLD (country-code top-level domain)?

A country-code top-level domain (ccTLD) is a two-letter top-level domain assigned to a specific country or territory — for example .fr (France), .de (Germany), or .ai (Anguilla).

Some ccTLDs have taken on meanings well beyond their origin: .ai, assigned to Anguilla, became strongly associated with artificial intelligence and grew from roughly 144,000 registrations in 2022 to over a million by 2026.
