The State of Social Media Domains 2026

The world's most universal online behaviour, mapped against every live top-level domain — what the naming layer offers social media today, what it borrows, and the one word the root zone still doesn't say.

About 5.4 billion people use social media. The DNS has 1,441 live top-level domains. This report is the intersection of those two numbers: a census of every TLD that names a social behaviour, how many domains actually sit inside them, and where the platforms went instead.

1. The behaviour is universal. The naming layer isn't.

Social media is no longer a category of the internet — it is how most of the connected world uses it. Adoption has risen every year for a decade, and roughly 94% of people online now use at least one platform, touching about seven of them a month.

The naming layer never followed. Of 401.6 million registered domains at the end of Q2 2026, the entire set of names that live under a social-sounding string is roughly 2.4 million — less than one domain in a hundred and sixty.

2. A census of the social strings

Checked against the ICANN section of the Public Suffix List, 35 of the 1,441 live TLDs carry a string that names something social — talking, gathering, broadcasting, being watched. Thirty are generic strings; five are country codes the social web borrowed. Not one of them is .socialmedia. Neither .feed, .friends, .groups nor .podcast exists either.

Volume inside them is thin, and what volume exists belongs to strings that are only adjacent to social media rather than about it. The two largest — .live and .club — sell mostly to events and membership sites. The one string that says the thing plainly, .social, holds about 63,000 names, roughly one for every 86,000 social media users on earth.

3. So the platforms borrowed someone else's country

Demand for short, social-legible addresses did not disappear when the root zone failed to supply them — it went offshore. The sharing layer of the modern social web runs almost entirely on country codes repurposed as wordplay, from a Pacific atoll of 11,000 people to a Channel Island.

Read the column of TLDs on its own and the shape of the problem is obvious: the biggest social platforms on earth address their users through Tuvalu, Belgium, Guernsey, Montenegro, Libya, Estonia, Colombia, India and Italy. None of those strings mean anything. They were chosen because the letters happened to spell something, which is what an industry does when its own name is unavailable.

The dot-brand round of 2012 left the same gap. .youtube, .weibo, .flickr and .gmail were delegated and are barely used; Meta, TikTok, X, LinkedIn, Snap, Reddit, Discord and Telegram have no top-level domain at all. A decade on, the category that defines the consumer internet is still a tenant everywhere it appears.

4. Identity is drifting back toward the domain

The interesting movement of the last three years is not on the platforms — it is underneath them. Bluesky, with about 43.5 million registered accounts, lets anyone replace their handle with a domain they own, verified by a DNS record; Mastodon alone spreads about 18 million accounts across some 10,300 independent servers, each one addressed by its operator's own domain. Fifty million Linktree users are paying, in effect, for a hosted stand-in for a name they don't hold.

Every one of those mechanisms is the DNS being used as the identity layer social platforms never built. A handle is rented: it can be renamed, reassigned, suspended, or stranded when a platform's terms change. A domain is held, portable across every network at once, and — as agents start resolving people and brands on a user's behalf — machine-readable in a way a platform-local handle is not.

5. What it means for the ICANN 2026 round

The 2026 new gTLD round is the first chance since 2012 to close this gap, and the arithmetic is unusually plain. An industry of 5.4 billion participants, a $200B+ creator economy and a $32B professional layer is currently addressed by 35 approximate strings, about 2.4 million domains, and a handful of borrowed country codes. The category has no name of its own in the root.

That is why internet.Best is applying for .socialmedia alongside .creator, .influencer, .content and .streamer — the creator half of a ten-string portfolio whose other half addresses the AI layer. A name that says exactly what it is resolves for a person and for an agent without explanation, which is the whole basis on which the next decade of discovery gets sorted.
